Medicare was created when President Lyndon B. Johnson signed an amendment to the Social Security Act on July 30, 1965. At the 1965 signing ceremony, Johnson enrolled Truman as the first Medicare beneficiary and gave him the first Medicare card - Truman's wife, Bess got the second card. Medicare was designed to provide health insurance to people age 65 and older and to people under age 65 who are on social security disability. Medicare parts A & B provide hospital and medical insurance. However, there are deductibles and co-insurance amounts that are the responsibility of the Medicare recipient. Because of these costs, people buy Medicare supplement insurance, sometimes called Medigap insurance. People generally purchase this type of insurance in order to avoid the possibility of astronomic medical expenses. Medigap policies were first standardized in 1992 by the CMS or Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Currently, there are 10 standardized Medicare supplement or Medigap plans available. When you first become eligible for Medicare or are already on Medicare, we can sit down with you and explain how the various options would work for you.
